Almost every other household item has an obvious route out. A mattress does not. It will not fit in a sedan, most bulk collection programs limit or refuse them, and an old mattress left at a curb outside the rules is a citation waiting to happen.
It is also the item people most often end up storing rather than disposing of. Mattresses get replaced and the old one goes into the garage, the spare room or against a wall in the guest bedroom, where it stays for a year taking up more floor space than anything else in the house.
There is a practical reason for the difficulty: a mattress is bulky, awkward to grip, impossible to fold, and heavier than it looks once it has absorbed a few years of humidity. A queen is a genuinely two-person carry down a staircase, and a king is worse.
We take mattresses on their own or with everything else that needs to go — box springs, bed frames, headboards, adjustable bases and the bedroom furniture around them.

Disposal
Mattresses are recyclable — most of one, anyway
A mattress is mostly steel, foam, fiber and timber, and those are all materials with a recycling route — when a mattress is taken to a facility that separates them rather than to a tip. A single innerspring mattress contains a meaningful quantity of recoverable steel.
Where such a route is available for a load, that is where mattresses go. Anything genuinely contaminated — soaked, mold-damaged or infested — has to be handled as waste instead, both because no recycler will accept it and because moving it anywhere else spreads the problem.
Some facilities apply a per-mattress disposal fee. Where that is the case for your job it is included in the estimate you see before confirming rather than added on the day.

Do you take mattresses with bed bugs?

Can you take just the box spring?
Yes. Box springs, divan bases and slatted frames can be removed on their own — people often keep a newer mattress and get rid of a sagging base underneath it.
How much does mattress removal cost?
A single mattress is normally a minimum-load job. Some facilities charge a per-mattress disposal fee, and where that applies it is included in the estimate you see before confirming rather than added afterwards.
Will you take the bed frame as well?
Yes, and dismantling it is included. Metal frames, wooden slat bases, headboards and adjustable bases can all go in the same pickup as the mattress.
Is the mattress actually recycled?
Where the load goes to a facility that separates materials, yes — the steel, foam, fiber and timber all have recycling routes. Contaminated mattresses cannot be recycled and are disposed of instead, because no processor will accept them.
Can you collect while I am at work?
If the mattress is somewhere accessible without entering the house — a garage, a driveway, a curb — then usually yes. Leave clear instructions when you book. For anything inside, someone needs to let the crew in.
