Moving quotes are driven by how much there is — cubic feet on the truck, hours on the clock, boxes to pack. Every item you move is an item you pay to move, and a meaningful share of what goes on a truck gets thrown out within a month of arriving at the other end.
The pattern is consistent: furniture that will not fit the new layout, a mattress that was already due for replacement, the garage contents nobody has opened since the last move, and boxes labelled with a room that no longer exists in the new place.
Clearing first inverts the arithmetic. You pay once to dispose of it rather than paying to pack it, load it, transport it, unload it and then dispose of it anyway — which is four handling costs and a disposal cost for the same object.

What to do with furniture before moving
There is a predictable list. Nobody has ever been glad they paid to move a broken exercise bike across Dallas, and mattresses are transported far more often than they should be given the cost of moving one against the cost of replacing it.
Measure before you decide on the large pieces. A sectional that worked in an open-plan living room and does not fit the new one is the single most expensive mistake available on moving day, because you pay to move it and then pay again to get rid of it.

How far in advance should I book?
A week or so before packing starts is the sweet spot — late enough that you know what is going, early enough that you are not making decisions in a rush. Same-day slots exist, but this is a job that benefits from not being urgent.
Will this actually reduce my moving cost?
It reduces the volume your movers quote against, which is what most of a moving bill is built on. How much depends on how much you clear — but the mattresses, garage contents and unfitting furniture are usually where the meaningful volume sits.
Can you take things the movers refuse?
Often, yes. Movers commonly decline items that are damaged, soiled or infested, and those are exactly the things that end up abandoned at the old address. We can take them before that becomes a problem.
Can you come back after the move too?
Yes. Two visits is a common pattern — one to cut the load before packing, one afterwards to clear whatever was left behind.
Should I book before or after the moving survey?
Before, if you can. A surveyor quotes on what is in front of them, so clearing first is what actually lowers the number rather than just lowering the work.
What if I am not sure whether something fits the new place?
Measure the doorway and the wall in the new property before deciding. It is the one check that reliably prevents paying to move a piece you will dispose of a month later.
