Almost every junk removal company in Dallas prices the same way, and almost none of them explain it up front. The result is that people assume the number is arbitrary, or that it is set by how long the crew stands in the driveway. Neither is true.

It is priced by volume, not by the hour

What you are buying is space in a truck. A crew loads your items, and the charge reflects how much of the truck bed they occupy once packed properly. That is why the industry talks in fractions — a quarter load, a half load, a full truck — rather than quoting an hourly rate.

This matters more than it sounds. Under hourly pricing you and the crew want opposite things, and you cannot know the total until the work is finished, which is exactly when you have the least room to argue. Volume pricing settles the number first and makes a fast crew the company's problem to staff rather than your cost to absorb.

What pushes a job above the base rate

Four things regularly move a price beyond straight volume, and all four are predictable enough to be reflected in an estimate rather than sprung on you afterwards.

• Weight. Concrete, brick, tile, soil and roofing are dense enough that a small pile reaches a truck's legal load limit while barely filling the bed. These are assessed by weight instead.
• Disposal fees. Some categories carry a charge at the facility — refrigerators and air conditioners containing refrigerant, older televisions, and mattresses at some sites.
• Labor and access. A ground-floor garage and a third-floor walk-up with a turn on the landing are the same volume and very different jobs.
• Special handling. Anything that has to be dismantled, cut down or carried a long distance to reach the truck.
