Dallas bulk trash pickup vs. a junk removal crew: cost, timing and limits

The city's monthly brush and bulky collection costs nothing extra when your pile fits its rules and its calendar. Here is how to tell whether yours does, and what the alternatives cost when it doesn't.

Quick answer

Dallas bulk trash pickup — the city's monthly brush and bulky collection — costs nothing beyond your sanitation fee if the pile is 10 cubic yards or less, holds only accepted items and goes out Thursday to Sunday before your collection week. Book curbside junk pickup instead when it has to go sooner, is bigger, includes refrigerant appliances, electronics or construction debris, or is still inside.

The two solve the same problem on opposite terms: the city's service is already paid for and runs on its calendar and rules, while a crew runs on yours, for a price. Outside the Dallas city limits the rules differ — see bulk trash rules in five Dallas suburbs.

How does Dallas bulk trash pickup work?

Residential customers get one brush and bulky collection a month, up to 10 cubic yards. The city's 2026 calendar pictures that as a pile about 11 feet long, 6 feet deep and 4 feet high; the brush and bulky page has a cubic-yard calculator for other shapes.

The Dallas bulky trash schedule splits the city into four collection weeks, each starting on the first, second, third or fourth Monday of the month; on the 2026 calendar, weeks that start on a fifth Monday have no collection. Crews use a grapple arm and claw, so placement matters: they won't collect what the equipment can't reasonably reach, or where property could be damaged.

  1. Find your week on the City of Dallas sanitation page, in the free Dallas Sanitation app, which can also send reminders, or through 3-1-1.
  2. Pull out anything on the not-accepted list below, plus anything worth donating.
  3. Set the pile out between the Thursday and the Sunday before your collection week, not earlier.
  4. Place it just behind the front curb — not beside the house, in the alley, on a neighbor's frontage, in the street or on the sidewalk — even if your garbage goes out in the alley.
  5. Keep it 5 feet from roll carts, mailboxes, fences, water meters, parked cars, fire hydrants and poles, and out from under low limbs and power lines.
  6. Cut limbs to no more than 8 inches across and 10 feet long, and tie bags of grass and leaves.
  7. If crews leave an orange tag, they found a violation; correct it so the pile can be collected.

What won't Dallas bulk trash take, and where does it go instead?

Brush and household items too big for the roll cart are welcome. The not-accepted list matters more, because a pile that includes a prohibited item is generally still collected — and billed as non-compliant.

What Dallas brush and bulky collection refuses, and the alternatives
Not accepted at the curbWhere it can go instead
Refrigerators, freezers and A/C unitsMcCommas Bluff Landfill once any refrigerant is removed (city transfer stations refuse them), or a crew, which takes them as they are
TVs, computers, stereos, microwaves and other electronicsFree drop-off for Dallas residents at McCommas Bluff or a city transfer station, which send them to an e-Stewards-certified recycler
TiresUp to 6 a year, no more than 25 inches in diameter, at McCommas Bluff or a city transfer station
Paint and chemicalsThe Dallas County Home Chemical Collection Center at 11234 Plano Rd, free for Dallas residents with a license and a utility bill; our hazardous waste disposal guide covers each item
Building materials, brick, rock, concrete, glass panes, mirrors, roofing, dirt and sodThe contractor, if the project needed one, as the city expects; otherwise a crew, which prices dense material by weight
Bagged household garbage and business wasteThe garbage roll cart; businesses use their own hauler, since the service isn't available to commercial properties

One storm can bring down more brush than a month's 10 cubic yards. For that, brush and storm debris removal clears what is on the ground, or the oversize request below doubles the limit once a year if you can wait for your week.

What happens if your pile is too big or goes out early?

Set-outs over 10 cubic yards, or with prohibited items in them, are generally still collected and billed automatically at $60 per 5 cubic yards, in 5-cubic-yard increments; when the city announced the rules in 2020, it said the charge goes on the household's city utility bill. Early, oversize and non-compliant set-outs can also be cited on top of the fee, and neighbors can report them online. The rules sit in Dallas City Code Section 18-4.

The way to set out more without a fee is the Dallas oversize bulk pickup: once per calendar year, up to 20 cubic yards, requested online, in the Dallas 311 app or through 3-1-1 during the week before your collection week. The deadline is 11:59 p.m. on the Sunday before it starts, and a request can't be cancelled once submitted.

A charge that looks wrong can be disputed. A sanitation district manager reviews the collection records and can uphold, reduce or reverse the fee, with a second review on appeal.

Your collection week is a month away?

Photograph the pile or list what is in it, and the price appears before anyone is sent — no set-out window, no cubic-yard cap.

When is the city's collection the better choice?

Usually, if you can wait. The city service is the better deal when all four of these are true:

  • Your collection week is close, and the items can stay in the garage or yard until the Thursday before it.
  • Everything is on the accepted list, and the pile is within 10 cubic yards — or within 20 and you haven't used this year's oversize request.
  • You, or someone helping, can carry it all to the front curb.
  • Nothing in it is worth donating, or you have already set those pieces aside.

If all four hold, a crew buys you time and nothing else. Wait for your week.

When is junk removal worth it?

When the city's terms and your situation don't line up:

  • A date is fixed — a closing, listing photos, a move-out inspection, a tenant moving in — and your collection week falls after it.
  • The pile is past 10 cubic yards and this year's oversize request is used, or past 20 cubic yards either way.
  • It includes things the curb won't take, such as a refrigerator, a TV or renovation debris.
  • The items are still in the attic, upstairs or at the back of the garage, and carrying them out is the hard part.
  • You want usable pieces to reach donation or resale: a crew sorts the load as it goes on the truck, and a grapple claw doesn't.

Waiting has costs that never reach a bill: a garage or driveway out of use for weeks, the citation risk of setting out early, and upholstery that sits through a rainstorm and can no longer be donated. How a job runs also depends on the street; junk removal across Dallas neighborhoods covers alleys, high-rises and the rest.

What does skipping the wait cost?

Junk Koala prices a job by the space the load takes in the truck, not by the hour, and shows the price online from an item list or photos before anyone is dispatched. Starting prices climb from $129 for a single item, which is also the minimum charge, through $149 for a minimum load, $249 for a quarter load and $419 for a half truck, to $699 for a full truck.

Booking online takes up to $20 off a job above the minimum charge. Concrete, tile, soil and roofing are priced by weight instead, and anything over one truckload is quoted after a walkthrough; how pricing works explains the load sizes.

Against the city, the arithmetic is simple: a compliant pile costs nothing extra and an over-limit one is billed in $60 steps of 5 cubic yards, so for a pile only a little too big, splitting it across two months or using the oversize request beats any crew. What a crew sells is the date, the carrying and the items the city refuses.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my Dallas bulky trash week?

Look up your address on the city's sanitation page, in the free Dallas Sanitation app or by calling 3-1-1. Your week starts on the first, second, third or fourth Monday of the month, and the app can remind you before it arrives.

Can I put a mattress out for Dallas brush and bulky collection?

Yes. Mattresses are on the city's accepted list, as long as the whole pile stays within 10 cubic yards and goes out in the Thursday-to-Sunday window before your week.

How early can I put bulk trash out in Dallas?

No earlier than the Thursday before your collection week. The set-out window runs Thursday to Sunday, and an early pile can bring a citation in addition to any collection fee.

What if I miss my Dallas bulk trash week?

Wait for next month's week; the pile can't go out until the Thursday before it. Meanwhile, Dallas residents can haul their own household waste free to McCommas Bluff Landfill or a city transfer station in a car, pickup or trailer under 15 feet, or book a crew.

Can I get more than 10 cubic yards picked up in Dallas?

Yes, once a calendar year. Request an oversize collection of up to 20 cubic yards online, in the Dallas 311 app or through 3-1-1 by 11:59 p.m. on the Sunday before your collection week; it can't be cancelled after you submit it.

Can I dispute a Dallas brush and bulky charge?

Yes, with a Sanitation Billing Dispute service request online or through 3-1-1. A wrong account, an uncollected pile or an overstated volume are valid grounds; not knowing the rules is not.
